Olympic Goalie Mask Recieves National Attention Ryan Miller's Goalie Mask Created by Bishop Designs Causes Olympic Buzz
Grand Blanc, MI- Whenever Ray Bishop, owner of Bishop Designs in Grand Blanc, works on a custom painted mask for Goalie Ryan Miller its always an intresting and creative ride. "Ryan Miller always has great ideas and is heavily involved with the creative process and the goalie mask for the Winter Olympics was no exception," said Bishop. "He wanted something patriotic, so I painted Uncle Sam flexing his muscles."
Bishop has been painting Miller's mask since he was a freshman at Michigan State University. The slogan "Miller Time" has been something that Miller has had on his mask since the beginning of his profesional career. Ryan started wearing "Matt Man" on his helmet as a tribute to his cousin Matt Schoals, who died in 2007 from complications of a bone marrow transplant treating his leukemia. "When Matt passed away I painted a halo around the bulldogs head to represent him, its something that I know is close to Ryan's heart."
This story has received national coverage and over 451 online articles. The International Olympic Committee is ordering Miller, the starter for the United States, and his backup Jonathan Quick to remove or cover slogans on the back of their masks due to IOC rule No. 51, which states bars advertising, demonstrations and propaganda are forbidden? When asked about all of the media attention regarding Miller's mask Bishop stated, "I really hope they don't make him remove Matt Man from his mask, I know it means a lot to him," said Bishop.
